Sarah Em FTW

Taking time off this blog may not have been the best idea – I have definitely become lazy.  I just want to give you guys a quick update on what’s going on with me and I’m posting two Sarah McLachlan songs this week!

The relationship building is going well, and I have recently been reminded of what great friends I have been blessed with.  I have started a French class for the summer and it is pretty intense.  There is a lot of homework – to give you an idea, we are covering 10 chapters in 5 weeks.  This means 2 Chapters a week including being tested on each chapter.  Also, French is not a thing like Spanish outside of some things that simply make it more confusing to learn.  Pronouncing the language has proved to be a huge challenge for me.  Oh well, after this summer I will never have to study another foreign language if I don’t want to.  Outside of the class I’m trying to keep things taken care of around the house, get some exercise, get the dogs out of the house as much as possible and spend some quality time with Zoe and Tristen.  That usually includes Dawson’s Creek.  Don’t judge me.  Please. Refocused and Back in Action

Sometimes a girl just needs some time to take a breath, and now that I’ve done that I am ready to catch up!

I don’t have any specific topic for this post, just letting you guys know what the rest of the year will look like here.  Since I missed 7 weeks, for the next 7 weeks you will be hearing two songs a week.  After that I will go back to my normal 1 song a week for the rest of the year.  I am also going to finish up the “Lover’s Less Wild” series as far as writing, and I’ll probably be posting some interviews with other musicians as well. Taking a Short Break

I am taking a break from the blog.  Creatively I’m dry, and I’m not okay with putting up crappy stuff.  It will more than likely just be until school is over and then I will make up for the songs I miss over summer.

Life’s a Little Busy

Four more weeks until school is over, and it’s been turned into overdrive.  Not a lot of time to blog, but I (barely) found time to record a song.  Per the request of Mr. Caleb White, I give you a rough version of “Green Eyes” by Coldplay.  Enjoy.

Lovers Less Wild, Pt. 2

A year ago I started this song, and wrote the first half of it in about fifteen minutes.  Over the next 11 months, I basically played what I’d written and tried to put something else with it and failed miserably.  I was actually beginning to get pretty discouraged because it wasn’t as if I just couldn’t finish this song – I couldn’t write anything, with the exception of two worship songs that basically came straight out of scripture.

This past Wednesday morning I was getting ready for bible study by reading over the Psalm for the week, and praying when I decided to play a couple songs on guitar.  For some reason I decided to go back to that song, and the second half came to me as I was playing.  It was pretty incredible; I was actually singing words faster than I could write them down.  The coolest part was that the second half really stood out to me as being perfect for Kelsey White.  She just recently asked me to perform at a benefit concert that will help support her in going to Scotland for YWAM.

Lovers Less Wild

I decided to do the song Wedding Dress by Derek Webb this week.  I have always loved this song, but I loved it even more after I listened to his CD “The House Show” where he did an intro that explained where the song came from.  There is also a good explanation on YouTube, but this one is better in my opinion.  I love his willingness to admit that he struggles with believing that Jesus really is all we need.  In a world where no one is perfect, we are constantly let down by the people around us, so it is no wonder that believing we don’t need anything outside of the Lord, and He will not only provide but also unconditionally love us, is difficult for us to believe.  Here is Derek Webb’s intro to the song:

Derek Webb also wrote this song about issues he has with the Church, and I share those feelings with him.  However, the connection I had with the song is with my disbelief, and my lack of faith.  I decided to record a very raw version – it’s just me and the guitar, and it’s the only take I did.  I hope you all enjoy the song, and I’d love your feedback on this one!

My Heart Has Begun to Sing

I love Karla Adolphe.  If you didn’t check her out after my first cover, you should definitely do so now.  She finds a way to speak for my soul in a way very few artists can.  Please go listen to and purchase her music, and congratulate her on mommy-hood while you’re at it. Expect to hear a couple more songs of this CD at some point this year, because it really is one of my favorite albums of all time.

The song this week is “Skating” and it really speaks some truth about our needing a spiritual family and how much freedom in Christ we are given when we allow those intimate relationships to form.  Again, if you like my version you will love Karla’s.  Please give her a visit and let her know how much you love her music :)

Few Words

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

This song is so sweet, and I hope you love it as much as I do.  Karla Adolphe wrote it for her album she did with Enter the Worship Circle, “Chair and Microphone Vol. 3,” which you can purchase here.   I love everything about Enter the Worship Circle, and if you’ve never listened to any music from the albums, click one of those links and get to it!  Our lives have been so enriched in the last few years by this music and the people behind it.  Listen this year for songs from Tim and Laurie Thornton, too, as I’m hoping to get the okay to record a song or two from them.

Next week I plan on writing about why I love roller derby so much, so look for that.  This past week hasn’t been too inspiring in the blogging department, so I leave you with a song alone.

War Of My Life

It’s been suggested by someone whose opinion I respect that I put the song at the beginning of my post, that way you all can listen while reading.  This week I have finally recorded the John Mayer medley!  I am really excited about sharing it with you guys, as I’ve been practicing/tweaking it for about a month and a half now and I’m happy with how it came out.

I love John Mayer’s music.  Over the years he has become somewhat of a douche as far as being a public figure, but he continues to make music that I can relate to and is pleasing to the ears.  Read More »

Why I Quit Politics

After the 2008 election, I made a conscious decision to just stop engaging in conversation with people about politics unless I knew them well, and knew that I could have an intelligent conversation without feelings getting hurt.  To be honest, the only person I’ve ever found who believed differently than me that this can happen with is Windy Smith.  I think this is because Windy has the ability to state her opinion as just that – her opinion; she doesn’t make me feel like I’m a bad person for disagreeing, and it takes me off the defense into a place where I’m able to express how I feel, and why I feel that way, without feeling like the future of our friendship is hanging in the balance.  The conflict comes in when two people are trying to convince each other that one side is 100% correct and has it all figured out.
