A Little Bit Country

For some reason I cannot seem to sit down and write like I could in previous months.  I realized after looking over the last few posts that it’s been a while since I’ve let you guys know how relationships in my life are going, so that’s what I’m going to do this week.  Before I do that, however, I’m going to share my songs for the week!

I’ve told you guys before how much I love country music, and so this week I’m sharing a couple more with you.  Both of them are one take songs (meaning I recorded them in one take after practicing them several times each) – one is the Dixie Chicks, “Not Ready to Make Nice,” and the other is Wade Bowen’s song “Who I Am.”  I recorded the Wade Bowen song specifically for my good friend Chrissy who insists I sing this at her wedding – when she has one.

Building relationships with females is very difficult.  Being friends with females is not, but going deeper in the relationships and trusting each other is tricky;  it requires a lot of patience, the willingness to be vulnerable, and the willingness to take a chance that you may get really hurt in the process.  Despite all of those things, I feel like my female friendships are progressing nicely.  Although it’s scary to put myself out there, I have found that it’s totally worth it.  To be able to talk to my girlfriends openly about my faith and about my marriage has been really freeing.

In our small group we have started splitting up the weeks by doing one week a month at Wine & Worship, and one week a month split up guys and girls.  The guys are reading “Wild at Heart” and the girls are reading “Captivating”; both are written by John Eldredge and his wife, Stasi, writes a lot of “Captivating.”  I am excited about it, I think God is really going to move in our group of ladies.  I will share more about that once it gets going.  If you haven’t read either of those books, I strongly suggest them.  I have only read “Captivating,” but Kyle says “Wild At Heart” is very good too.

Can You Picture This?

I kept thinking that eventually this week inspiration would hit and I would post an awesome blog about something cool. Unfortunately for you guys, that did not happen. I do, however, have a song to share with you. This goes along with my series and actually fits both of them. This was recorded in one take in Matt Pittman’s house a couple months ago, and it was also the number one on the pop billboard charts on August 9, 1984 – the exact day I was born. I give you, “When Doves Cry,” by Prince.

I have been productive this week in that I have started writing a new song. I think it’s finished, but it needs some polishing. I hope you’re all doing well, take care!

Worship@8500.. er.. 9200?

This past weekend Kyle and I had the awesome opportunity to drive to Colorado and visit some of our close friends for an event called Worship At 8500.  It was absolutely one of the best experiences I have ever had, and I’m so excited to share what God showed me while we were there.

At the same time, I’m sharing 4 songs this week.  I know that’s a lot, but I had to post the two I had recorded from last week plus two from this week.  Every night the mic was opened up for an Enter the Worship Circle, Chair & Mic cover, and every night someone played a song by Aaron!  Now, I love Aaron’s CD but I felt that Karla needed a little love, too.  This week all 4 songs are off different Chair & Mic albums – “Centuries” by Aaron, “Quiet Now” by Ben, and “Save Me” and “You Are Mine” by Karla.  The only one missing is Tim Coons.  I just didn’t have chord charts for his CD yet and no patience to be a musician and figure them out on my own.  Definitely still check out his Chair and Mic CD and his The Deadly Sins and Beatitudes CD – amazing.  Next year I plan to go prepared to cover a beautiful Karla Adolphe song! An Interview with The Walla Recovery

The first time I heard about The Walla Recovery was about 3 years ago.  My friend Sarah told me about her husband’s friend Zack who wrote good Christian acoustic music.  I listened and was instantly sold.  Zack’s music is well-written, honest, and full of his desire to love the Lord better.

I went to see the guys play a show at The House Coffee Bar in Fort Worth, and afterward got a chance to pick their brains.  Here is the result! Read More »

A Fancy Genie!

This week I am giving you some music PLUS I am introducing you to a band that I love.  Please as your listening to my songs for the week, open up a new tab and check out the interview I did with The Walla Recovery.  I’m posting two songs that go with the series I set out for myself – one is a birthday song, and one is a one run through only.  I promise that next week I will get back to the writing series, as well. Sarah Em FTW

Taking time off this blog may not have been the best idea – I have definitely become lazy.  I just want to give you guys a quick update on what’s going on with me and I’m posting two Sarah McLachlan songs this week!

The relationship building is going well, and I have recently been reminded of what great friends I have been blessed with.  I have started a French class for the summer and it is pretty intense.  There is a lot of homework – to give you an idea, we are covering 10 chapters in 5 weeks.  This means 2 Chapters a week including being tested on each chapter.  Also, French is not a thing like Spanish outside of some things that simply make it more confusing to learn.  Pronouncing the language has proved to be a huge challenge for me.  Oh well, after this summer I will never have to study another foreign language if I don’t want to.  Outside of the class I’m trying to keep things taken care of around the house, get some exercise, get the dogs out of the house as much as possible and spend some quality time with Zoe and Tristen.  That usually includes Dawson’s Creek.  Don’t judge me.  Please. Refocused and Back in Action

Sometimes a girl just needs some time to take a breath, and now that I’ve done that I am ready to catch up!

I don’t have any specific topic for this post, just letting you guys know what the rest of the year will look like here.  Since I missed 7 weeks, for the next 7 weeks you will be hearing two songs a week.  After that I will go back to my normal 1 song a week for the rest of the year.  I am also going to finish up the “Lover’s Less Wild” series as far as writing, and I’ll probably be posting some interviews with other musicians as well. Taking a Short Break

I am taking a break from the blog.  Creatively I’m dry, and I’m not okay with putting up crappy stuff.  It will more than likely just be until school is over and then I will make up for the songs I miss over summer.

Life’s a Little Busy

Four more weeks until school is over, and it’s been turned into overdrive.  Not a lot of time to blog, but I (barely) found time to record a song.  Per the request of Mr. Caleb White, I give you a rough version of “Green Eyes” by Coldplay.  Enjoy.

Lovers Less Wild, Pt. 2

A year ago I started this song, and wrote the first half of it in about fifteen minutes.  Over the next 11 months, I basically played what I’d written and tried to put something else with it and failed miserably.  I was actually beginning to get pretty discouraged because it wasn’t as if I just couldn’t finish this song – I couldn’t write anything, with the exception of two worship songs that basically came straight out of scripture.

This past Wednesday morning I was getting ready for bible study by reading over the Psalm for the week, and praying when I decided to play a couple songs on guitar.  For some reason I decided to go back to that song, and the second half came to me as I was playing.  It was pretty incredible; I was actually singing words faster than I could write them down.  The coolest part was that the second half really stood out to me as being perfect for Kelsey White.  She just recently asked me to perform at a benefit concert that will help support her in going to Scotland for YWAM.
